Gandolf giving rides

Our search for the perfect family dog began many years ago in our local library. We were pouring over an all breeds book when we discovered a page that read:

"Leonberger - The European Babysitter".

Gandolf and Nadia

Our first Leonberger, Gandolf Lion of Walhall, came from Germany in 1992 and stayed with us for nearly 11 years before he left us for ever.

We never thought we would be so lucky again, but today we are sharing our lives with two of Gandolf's descendents: his great great nephew Dumbledore Lion of Walhall and his great great niece Kaia, Lion of Walhall

Kaia at 10 weeks

Dumbledore has sired a number of litters in both Canada and the US.

Dumbledore and Kaia February 2008

We are planning a litter with Dumbledore and Kaia in 2009 and are now taking reservations for our puppylist. If interested, please contact us to learn more about this wonderful breed and what we expect of you, if you are to own one of our puppies.

All our dogs have become a credit to their breed. The Leonberger is truly a gentle giant who likes to be included in everything the family does. Even though the Leo is a large dog, they are lively and agile. Their temperament is calm and friendly, taking all situations in stride.

The Leonberger has a long glossy coat which he sheds, especially in the spring. I have begun to collect the soft downy undercoat and use it to spin and knit hats and gloves.

Unlike his ancestors the St.Bernard and Newfoundland, the Leonberger has tight lips and does not tend to drool (unless you are waving a hot dog in front of his nose). From his Newfoundland heritage, the Leonberger has inherited his webbed feet and love of water, but in the absence of a body of water any mud puddle will suffice.

The Leonberger is a head strong dog that will require much attention and training as a young dog. Socialization with both people and other dogs is paramount for a Leonberger to live up to his full potential.
